Plutonomics and Roberta Metsola: an astrological study

You may be wondering why I chose to upload a blogpost entitled Plutonomics and its connection with President Roberta Metsola's chart.

Firstly, she is Maltese, and occupying one of the prominent positions in the EU is certainly of interest to astrologers. You may have been born on the same day but you aren't President, granted. The general idea is that planets in your natal chart have a way of playing out in your own life. How these aspects have played out in her life is very, very interesting.

So what does it have to do with Pluto? This small planet lost its status as a planet in 2006 which had us astrologers tickled pink - as if that was going to have us change the way we look at charts. The Moon isn't a planet either and yet it is a very important point in the chart. Same with Pluto.

In astrology, Pluto represents transformation, power, and rebirth. It governs the cycles of death, rebirth and renewal, symbolizing where power lies in the chart. When Pluto is prominent in a chart, it indicates areas where one might experience intense transformation or power struggles. I've also found it in charts of people who deal with power in some form, whether the native (owner of a chart) is the tea lady at the local council or president of a country. Power is power. In the hypothetical case of a tea lady (or gentleman) at a local Bocci Club, let's say,  with the exact chart as President Metsola, s/he may well be the one person who supports/enables power to flow smoothly or not so smoothly during committee meetings......The sky is still telling the story.

Here is a small list of people you may have heard of (sic) with Pluto on the Midheaven in their charts; the Midheaven is the highest point in the sky at the time, place and date of birth and says something about one's career.

The list goes as follows; Vladimir Putin, Mary Shelley, Oliver Stone, Saddam Hussein and also Maximilian Robespierre . Each of these people have had to deal with the issue of power in some form. Their charts are all different, but they have one thing in common; Pluto is conjunct the Midheaven. How the issue of power is played out and the effect it had on the course of history is, in some cases, still being written.

Mary Shelley, in 'Frankenstein', for example, explores how destructive the thirst for knowledge can be. Oliver Stone's films deal with power and also power which brings wars. He's produced a film called "Nuclear Now", a very plutonic topic. Robespierre is famous for spearheading the Reign of Terror in French Revolutionary times. Saddam Hussein was President of Iraq for a while and.... well we know what happened to him. As an aside, I have an astrologer friend abroad whose partner also has Pluto conjunct the MC (midheaven) and his occupation was to decommission nuclear submarines. Such is the power of Pluto.

Let's have a look at President Metsola's chart and the themes in the chart. We know about the Pluto conjunct MC; the theme of power comes up in relation to her career.

Astrologers always begin by looking at the sign on the ascendant. President Metsola's rising sign is Sagittarius, a sign associated with knowledge and the freedom to pursue it. Jupiter is therefore the 'Lord of the chart' as it rules Sag. This means that the native (the owner of the natal chart) will express herself through the activities associated with this fire sign (Sagittarius) and needs the freedom to do so.

The Sun is in Capricorn, so the soul's expression is to seek order, responsibility and practicality through the lens of Capricorn and is assisted by Mars, also in the same sign. Mars represents her warrior energy, her level of motivation. The Sun and Mars are very focused. She gets the job done.

Finally, we notice that President Metsola has a Virgo Moon, which denotes an emotional need to understand and analyse what she intuits. It is partile (exact conjunction) the North Node of the Moon, which tells us that her life path is to become practical, grounded, hardworking and as useful as can be. Again, she gets the job done, but this time with a Virgo overtone: to help others.

These are the essential themes in the chart.

But it is the aspects Pluto makes to her chart that are interesting.

Fast forward to the MEP elections of 2014. Transiting Pluto is exactly conjunct Metsola's natal Mercury. Mercury in Capricorn is in the first house of the chart, telling is that she is a person who a communicator and she does this in a very factual down-to-earth manner. Her thoughts are organised and she is a capable businesswoman. Her 'business' is supported by the activities of the 6th, 7th and 9th houses, areas of the chart to do with service, partnerships and knowledge. Her powerful communication skills at this time won her a seat in the EU Parliament.

In the MEP elections of 2019, Pluto again makes its mark when together with Saturn and the lunar South Node make contact with her natal Sun and Mars. Remember that Pluto denotes change/transformation. The natal Sun in the chart is about the person herself and coming into contact with Pluto (which we must remember from her natal chart), is about a powerful career, or a career which has a powerful theme.

Shortly after, in 2020, (President) Metsola was voted in as Vice President of the  EU parliament. Pluto is a very slow-moving planet and was still aspecting the natal Sun in her chart. What is interesting is that transiting Neptune conjoined the natal lunar South Node, indicating that she was about to embark on something totally different from the past, something that would require her to be less idealistic and more grounded (as her natal Moon indicates).Neptune is also associated with the world of politics (Neptune = idealism). Transiting Venus as well as the transiting Moon made contact with her natal Pluto. She was a popular choice, as indicated by the Venus/Moon aspect.

Pluto strikes again on her 43rd birthday, when she was elected to the presidency. Note how transiting Pluto now sits on her natal Sun. Interestingly, transiting Mars (which in her natal chart, is conjunct her Sun) is crossing over the ascendant, and the transiting Moon is on the Lord of the Chart, Jupiter. Connections, connections, connections.

When President Roberta Metsola was re-elected to the presidency on the 16th July 2024, Pluto was not in play, as the planet had already moved into the next sign. However, transiting Mars and Uranus were exactly 120 degrees from her Natal Sun and Mars.
In a previous post, I mentioned how this Mars/Uranus conjunct the malefic star Algol as the most talked about topic in the astrological community. This aspect, however, is a harmonious one. The story of Medusa is a powerful story of a young woman in a patriarchal system which values and upholds the power and heroism of men, and diminishes the value of women. President Metsola's career has certainly been and continues to be an example of women empowering themselves.

The last question: does her natal chart make contact in any way with the Malta chart? It certainly does. What this usually means is that her life story will be significant in our history.

This is long enough so I'll stop here. I hope that you enjoyed reading this and that you find it interesting. My intention is to state things simply.

I am in no way making any political statements. It is the story of a woman who made (and continues to make) a name for herself in the political world, one traditionally dominated by men.

Blessings,
Cindy
